Radially Aligned Porous Silk Fibroin Scaffolds as Functional Templates for Engineering Human Biomimetic Hepatic Lobules

Xiuli Wang et al.

Summary: A versatile strategy was developed to fabricate biomimetic hepatic lobules in vitro, utilizing silk protein scaffolds with radially aligned lamellar sheets and interconnected channels. Coculturing human hepatocytes and primary endothelial cells on these scaffolds resulted in enhanced hepatocyte functions and physiological cell organization, replicating hepatic-like parenchymal-mesenchymal growth patterns. This biomimetic technology holds potential for applications in bioartificial liver engineering and drug metabolism investigation.

Understanding the Continuous Dynamic Mechanical Behavior of Animal Silk

Zhuochen Lv et al.

Summary: Animal silks have unique viscoelastic properties that differ from their linear-elastic response under dynamic loading conditions. By establishing a structure-mechanic model based on viscoelastic theory, this study provides insight into the continuous dynamic mechanical behavior of silk and how it can guide the design of high-performance polymers, particularly polymer fibers with desired dynamic mechanical characteristics.

Mechanism of Mechanical Training-Induced Self-Reinforced Viscoelastic Behavior of Highly Hydrated Silk Materials

Zhuochen Lv et al.

Summary: Mechanical training of silk materials leads to the rapid formation of a molecular cross-linking network, enhancing the mechanical properties. The study categorizes the structural evaluation of silk proteins during mechanical training into three stages and establishes a five-parameter viscoelastic model to understand the structure-property relationship. This research provides insights into the design of soft silk functional materials.

Facile preparation of agar/polyvinyl alcohol-based triple-network composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical performances

Ran Wang et al.

Summary: Triple-network hydrogels were successfully prepared using freezing method and free radical polymerization to create physical and chemical cross-linked structures, enhancing the mechanical properties and stability of the material. The composite hydrogel showed rapid self-recovery after consecutive and discontinuous compressions, providing a new idea for the preparation of multifunctional hydrogels with good thermal stability, mechanical properties, and self-recovery capability.

Shape-Engineerable Silk Fibroin Papers for Ideal Substrate Alternatives of Plastic Electronics

Haitao Liu et al.

Summary: Plastic-based electronics are being used to bridge the gap in soft interface applications, but their environmental impact should be considered. Silk fibroin offers a green alternative for electronics development, but brittleness of silk films remains a challenge. The development of trace-ion-assisted plasticization strategy has led to the creation of shape-engineerable pure silk fibroin paper (PSFP), overcoming the brittleness of pure silk films and enabling new possibilities for electronic prototypes and devices.

Mechanical Training-Driven Structural Remodeling: A Rational Route for Outstanding Highly Hydrated Silk Materials

Ting Shu et al.

Summary: By developing an engineered mechanical training-driven structural remodeling strategy, highly hydrated silk materials (HHSMs) can be improved to produce mechanically trained-HHSMs (MT-HHSMs) with increased fracture strength and Young's modulus. Additionally, the animal silk-like highly oriented molecular crosslinking network structure provides MT-HHSMs with fascinating physical and functional features.

Microbial production of megadalton titin yields fibers with advantageous mechanical properties

Christopher H. Bowen et al.

Summary: The study engineered microbial production of high-performance fibers with properties similar to natural titin, but with higher strength, toughness, and damping energy than many synthetic and natural polymers. The unique inter-chain crystallization of folded immunoglobulin-like domains is suggested to be the key to these superior properties, allowing resistance to interchain slippage while permitting intra-chain unfolding. These fibers have potential applications in fields ranging from biomedicine to textiles, and the developed approach is expected to spur further innovation in microbial production of high-performance materials.

Moderate conformational transition promotes the formation of a self-reinforced highly oriented silk fibroin network structure

Ting Shu et al.

Summary: By combining experimental characterization and molecular dynamics simulation, this study revealed the importance of moderate conformational transition in promoting the formation of a low-density crosslinking molecular network in silk fibroin, which in turn significantly enhances the strength of the material. These findings have deepened our understanding of fundamental questions related to silk fibroin assembly and paved the way for new strategies to fabricate mechanical-enhanced silk fibroin materials.

Influence of hydrated protons on temperature and humidity responsiveness of silk fibroin hydrogel ionotronics

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrated protons play a key role in the conductive mechanism of SFHIs, affecting their temperature and humidity responses; the temperature response follows the rate of proton rearrangement reaction, while the humidity response follows percolation theory; a combined model was developed to decouple the experimental responses of SFHIs during synchronized temperature and humidity variations.
