Reducing the effect of sample bias for small data sets with double-weighted support vector transfer regression

Huan Luo et al.

Summary: Small data sets present a challenge in machine learning, especially in regression scenarios, where a lack of relevant data can lead to biased models. This article proposes a novel regression-based transfer learning model that transfers knowledge from a large, relevant data set to a small data set, reducing bias and improving prediction performance. The proposed approach, DW-SVTR, significantly reduces the impact of small sample bias compared to standard ML methods, as demonstrated through numerical results.

Seismic design and subassemblage tests of buckling-restrained braced RC frames with shear connector gusset connections

Jiulin Bai et al.

Summary: The novel BRB connection proposed in this paper provides a more reliable connection between BRB and RC components, effectively reducing the negative effects of frame action. The seismic design approach for the gusset plates, based on the generalized uniform force method, was developed and tested through cyclic tests, showing stable behavior under loading and successful transfer of plastic hinges. Good agreement between simulation and test results was observed, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed connections and design approach.

Implementing ensemble learning methods to predict the shear strength of RC deep beams with/without web reinforcements

De-Cheng Feng et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a practical and comprehensive implementation of ensemble methods for predicting the shear strength of deep beams with or without web reinforcements. The study utilizes four typical ensemble machine learning models and demonstrates their superior performance over traditional machine learning methods in predicting accuracy and discrepancy.

Experimental investigation into the seismic behavior of squat reinforced concrete walls subjected to acid rain erosion

Yan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of acid rain erosion on squat RC walls, an important component of lateral force-resisting systems, using artificial climate simulation and quasi-static loading tests. Results indicated that with increased acid rain spraying cycles, there was a gradual degradation in concrete strength, corrosion of steel bars, deterioration of bearing capacity and deformation capacity of squat RC walls, and a shift in failure mode towards shear failure characteristics. The study also found a significant decrease in ductility and energy-dissipation capacity, with a larger degradation rate of shear strength compared to flexural strength under acid rain erosion.
