Simulation and flow physics of a shocked and reshocked high-energy-density mixing layer

Jason D. Bender et al.

Summary: This paper investigates multimode instability growth and multimaterial mixing induced by multiple shock waves in a high-energy-density (HED) environment, presenting a three-dimensional computational modelling framework. The study reveals that conductive Peclet numbers are much smaller in the HED flow due to efficient thermal conduction by free electrons.

Melting of Tantalum at Multimegabar Pressures on the Nanosecond Timescale

R. G. Kraus et al.

Summary: Tantalum, once considered a bcc metal, is now predicted to transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures. In in situ x-ray diffraction experiments, tantalum did not transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures but showed incipient melting at approximately 254 GPa and complete melting at 317 GPa. These results are consistent with findings from gas gun experiments, suggesting a melting temperature of 8070 K at 254 GPa.

Multi-megabar Dynamic Strength Measurements of Ta, Au, Pt, and Ir

Summary: Magnetic loading was used to compress four different metals to extreme pressures shocklessly, with results showing surprisingly similar shear stress levels supported by these metals. This departure from ambient conditions was analyzed through wave profile analysis and Bayesian calibration.
