Physical aging of selenium glass: Assessing the double mechanism of equilibration and the crystallization process

A. Morvan et al.

Summary: This study focused on the physical aging of a selenium glass through DSC and FSC, showing that the glass reaches thermodynamic equilibrium and stability over time. By using FSC on rejuvenated samples, the study reproduced the way the glass reaches equilibrium at the laboratory time scale, revealing that the glass can reach equilibrium in one or two steps depending on the aging temperature. Additionally, a second phenomenon was observed where the glass crystallizes once equilibrium is reached at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature.

Temperature correction at high heating rates for conventional and fast differential scanning calorimetry

Juergen E. K. Schawe

Summary: The thermal lag of DSC, which is a heating rate independent constant, can affect the measured onset temperature of melting peaks, especially in cases of high scanning rates and small samples where non-linear behavior may occur. A general relationship between heating rate and sample mass dependence of the onset temperature can be derived using a conventional heat transfer model of a DSC. This unusual behavior is attributed to the melting event time being shorter than the equilibration time of the DSC, and the approach presented can be used to correct onset temperatures in such cases.
