Realistic sunshade system at L1 for global temperature control

Christer Fuglesang et al.

Summary: Space-based geoengineering involving a space sunshade has been rarely studied practically due to being considered unrealistic as a near-future alternative to combat climate change. This paper evaluates the feasibility of implementing a space sunshade near the first Lagrange point of the Sun-Earth system, considering technological development, trajectories, size, and cost. The study is heavily reliant on the optical properties of future solar sails, with an optimal and a more conservative alternative being studied.

Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Niklas Boers

Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has gradually weakened in recent decades, potentially approaching a critical transition point that could have significant impacts on the global climate system. This study introduces an observation-based early-warning system for such transitions, highlighting the importance of monitoring the AMOC for potential changes in its operation mode.
