Understanding the Crucial Significance of the Temperature and Potential Window on the Stability of Carbon Supported Pt-Alloy Nanoparticles as Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysts

Tina Dukic et al.

Summary: This research provides a study on the stability of carbon-supported intermetallic Pt-alloy electrocatalysts and determines the effects of temperature and potential window on metal dissolution. The findings contradict the commonly accepted hypothesis that Pt dissolution is not significantly affected by temperature, and highlight the critical role of temperature in governing Pt stability and metal retention in Pt-alloy electrocatalysts. Additionally, the study shows that the rate of Pt redeposition increases with temperature, providing insight into the temperature-dependent kinetics of Pt stability.

Platinum Dissolution in Realistic Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers

Konrad Ehelebe et al.

Summary: Research has shown that specific Pt dissolution increases significantly with decreasing Pt loading; compared to experiments in aqueous model systems with flow cells, the measured dissolution in GDE experiments is considerably lower; further reduction in Pt dissolution is observed by adding a membrane onto the catalyst layer.

The Discrepancy in Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyst Lifetime Explained: RDE vs MEA-Dynamicity within the Catalyst Layer Matters

Mohammad Fathi Tovini et al.

Summary: This study reveals the discrepancy in lifetime of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts between rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in an electrolyzer, due to the accumulation of microscopic oxygen bubbles in the electro-catalyst layer pores. This accumulation is more significant in RDE measurements, leading to rapid performance deterioration by shielding almost all catalyst active sites with gas bubbles, which also induces irreversible catalyst degradation.

Revealing the Nanostructure of Mesoporous Fuel Cell Catalyst Supports for Durable, High-Power Performance

Matthew Ko et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of nanoscale morphology in the performance of PtCo catalysts supported on different types of porous carbons. Accessible porous carbons have larger and more numerous mesopores compared to conventional porous carbons, leading to improved local oxygen transport through microporous channels. Although accessible porous carbons show faster rates of electrochemical surface area loss in durability testing, they maintain superior high current density performance at the end of the test due to enhanced local oxygen transport.

Recent developments in Pt-Co catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells

Chenyu Wang et al.

Summary: Development of high efficiency and durable Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction catalysts is crucial for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell systems. Pt-Co bimetallic catalysts show promise for fuel cell applications, but further improvements in both performance and durability are necessary to meet market demands. Understanding the relationship between catalyst properties and fuel cell performance, as well as developing more effective methods for customizing Pt-Co catalyst features, is key to maximizing their potential.

Impact of Carbon Support Structure on the Durability of PtCo Electrocatalysts

T. E. O'Brien et al.

Summary: In this study, various low-PtCo MEAs were fabricated and tested using an accelerated stress test, which revealed that porous supports retain more electrochemically-active surface area, leading to higher performance post-AST. However, porous supports also exhibit greater increases in transport resistance, possibly associated with enhanced Co leaching under the AST conditions.

Effect of Particle Size on the Dissolution of Pt3Co/C and Pt/C PEMFC Electrocatalysts

Xiaoping Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dissolution behavior of Pt and Co in three Pt3Co/C catalysts under potentiostatic and potentiodynamic conditions. It was found that Pt3Co/C has a higher dissolution rate, a higher steady state concentration of dissolved Pt, and a larger change in electrochemically-active surface area (ECA) compared to Pt/C with similar particle sizes, indicating inferior stability of Pt3Co. The higher rates of Pt dissolution for Pt3Co were attributed to higher extents of surface Pt oxidation.
