Characterization of Mannosyl Dioxanium Ions in Solution Using Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer NMR Spectroscopy

Frank F. J. de Kleijne et al.

Summary: The study characterizes low-populated, rapidly equilibrating mannosyl dioxanium ions using chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) NMR spectroscopy, revealing their structure and equilibration kinetics under relevant glycosylation conditions. Highly alpha-selective couplings were observed, suggesting glycosylation takes place via this elusive intermediate.

Isomer-Specific Two-Color Double-Resonance IR2MS3 Ion Spectroscopy Using a Single Laser: Application in the Identification of Novel Psychoactive Substances

Fred A. M. G. van Geenen et al.

Summary: The ion trap mass spectrometer allows for two-color double resonance IR-IR experiments on mass-to-charge selected ions using a single infrared laser. This simplifies the experimental complexity and enhances the application in analytical MS field. In a forensic context, the methodology was demonstrated by identifying previously unidentified isomeric novel psychoactive substances from a confiscated sample by the Amsterdam Police.

En Route to the Transformation of Glycoscience: A Chemist's Perspective on Internal and External Crossroads in Glycochemistry

David Crich

Summary: Carbohydrate chemistry has reached three crossroads in the transformation of the glycosciences, including the mechanism of glycosylation reactions, the link between mainstream organic chemistry and glycan synthesis, and the intersection of carbohydrate chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Rational design of glycosylation reactions, consideration of counterions and concentration, and collaboration among scientists from different fields are essential to address the sophisticated challenges and advance the development of stereospecific glycosylation reactions.
