Microbial biodiesel production from lignocellulosic biomass: New insights and future challenges

Sivakumar Uthandi et al.

Summary: Microbial oils offer a potential solution for biodiesel production, with oleaginous microorganisms accumulating high levels of oils in their cells. Using lignocellulosic biomass as a renewable raw material for producing second-generation biodiesel has become a fundamental approach for tackling challenges of higher energy costs, environmental protection, and depletion of crude oil reserves. Research is focused on examining different microbes' lipid accumulation capability using lignocellulosic biomass as substrates and overcoming future challenges in using lignocellulosic biomass for biodiesel production.
