Shape changes and cooperativity in the folding of the central domain of the 16S ribosomal RNA

Naoto Hori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the folding process of the 16S rRNA of the ribosome small subunit in response to Mg2+ ions or interactions with ribosomal proteins through molecular simulations. It reveals that the folding of rRNA is globally cooperative but exhibits heterogeneity in structural element ordering at different Mg2+ concentrations. The specificity of Mg2+ binding and its role in nucleating tertiary structures are also highlighted, providing insights into the early events of small subunit assembly.
