Race, immigration and health: the Hostile Environment and public health responses to Covid-19

Giorgia Dona

Summary: This paper examines how governmental management of the pandemic impacts the morbidity and mortality of migrants, gendered and racialized groups by analyzing the public health message campaign in relation to accommodation, health, and survival. Hostile Environment immigration policies have hindered these groups from following government public health guidelines, leading to increased risks of contracting coronavirus. These policies worsen existing health disparities in a multifaceted manner. The Covid virus serves as a biological descriptor for a political crisis of intersectional inequality in the politics of health.
