Seasonality and Oldowan behavioral variability in East Africa

Gonzalo J. Linares-Matas et al.

Summary: This article examines the seasonal scheduling of resource procurement and technological investment in early hominins. It explores the behavioral flexibility of Oldowan hominins in targeting different seasonally vulnerable demographics and discusses the impact of seasonal environments on lithic assemblages and resource handling costs. It also highlights the adaptive nature of Oldowan hominins in response to seasonal constraints and opportunities.

Characterizing seasonal fishing patterns and growth dynamics during the Middle and Late Holocene in the Strait of Magellan (Chilean Patagonia): Sclerochronological analysis of tadpole codling (Salilota australis) vertebrae

J. Torres et al.

Summary: This study uses sclerochronological analysis of tadpole codling vertebrae as a proxy to investigate the seasonal timing of fishing activities in archaeological sites in Chile. The results suggest that fishing activities were conducted throughout the year during the Late Holocene, with a focus on the cold season, while the Middle Holocene sites showed a tendency to fish during the warm season.

Nuna Nalluyuituq (The Land Remembers): Remembering landscapes and refining methodologies through community-based remote sensing in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Southwest Alaska

Jonathan S. Lim et al.

Summary: This article discusses a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to remote sensing in Southwest Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta that combines ethnographic inquiry and remote sensing to monitor, detect, and preserve cultural resources for Alaskan Native communities. The efficacy of this protocol on pre-contact settlement sites is demonstrated, and various methods such as ethnographic data collection, ethnobotanical surveys, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based spectroscopy are highlighted for future research on Yup'ik landscapes in the Y-K Delta.

Small game, estuaries, and nets: New perspectives on Norton culture coastal adaptations from a shell midden in Norton Sound, Alaska

Jason Miszaniec et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the animal remains from the Norton site of Difchahak in Alaska and finds that the inhabitants relied on mass capture of various seasonally available species to maintain year-round occupation. A comparison with neighboring Norton culture deposits suggests that differences between the sites are primarily driven by geographically dependent prey-species distributions.
