Two-Dimensional Structure of Flow Channels and Associated Upward Field-Aligned Currents: Model and Observations

Larry. R. Lyons et al.

Summary: Flow bursts play a major role in geomagnetic disturbances as they approach the inner plasma sheet, and their two-dimensional structure has been examined using the Rice Convection Model and ground-based radar observations. The low entropy plasma of a flow burst spreads azimuthally within the inner plasma sheet, leading to specific enhancements of subauroral polarization stream (SAPS) and dawnside auroral polarization stream (DAPS). The location of flow channels between dawn and dusk large-scale convection cells affects the enhancements of SAPS and DAPS, showing good agreement with observations and simulations.

Radar Observations of Flows Leading to Substorm Onset Over Alaska

Larry R. Lyons et al.

Summary: Auroral observations and radar analysis have revealed that the intrusion of low entropy plasma through flow channels triggers substorm onset in the inner plasma sheet. These flow channels play a significant role in the onset of substorms, altering the entropy distribution within the plasma sheet and causing instability leading to auroral and electromagnetic wave growth.
