Shrinkage of regional cities in Japan: Analysis of changes in densely inhabited districts

Summary: This study examines the relationship between central cities and surrounding densely inhabited districts (DIDs) in regional areas of Japan from 1960 to 2015. The results indicate that population and industry concentration in central cities are related to the demographic development processes of both central city and surrounding DIDs.
