Summary: Using a unique database tracking the exact location of Dallas Police Department patrol cars, this study finds that a decrease in police presence may lead to an increase in crime, shedding light on the impact of policing on criminal behavior.

Hot spots policing in a high-crime environment: an experimental evaluation in Medellin

Summary: This study examines the effects of hot spots policing on crime in a high-crime environment, finding improvements in short-term security perceptions and reductions in car thefts, particularly in the least secure areas. There was no evidence of crime displacement, but decreases in car thefts in nearby hot spots and assaults in nearby non-hot spots. Overall, citywide car thefts decreased by about 11%.

Hot Spots Across the Metropolis: Evaluating Hot Spots Directed Patrol at City and Suburban Locations

Summary: This study conducted a department-wide hot spots patrol experiment in Louisville, Kentucky, and found that the intervention did not have a significant impact on three outcomes related to crime. However, the location of hot spots did impact crime-related calls for service. The study discusses the importance and limitations of hot spots policing in suburban locations and the challenges of department-wide interventions.
