Tooth chipping prevalence and patterns in extant primates

Ian Towle et al.

Summary: This study compared the chipping patterns in extant primates and found that hard-object-feeding specialist species had higher chipping rates, while species that seasonally ate harder foods had intermediate chipping frequencies, and those that less commonly consumed hard food items had the lowest chipping frequencies. The results suggest that hard food mastication influences differences in chipping prevalence among the species studied.
