Examining multidimensional poverty reduction in India 2005/6-2015/16: Insights and oversights of the headcount ratio

Summary: This study examines the trends of multidimensional poverty in India between 2005/6 and 2015/16, proposing the use of adjusted headcount ratio or Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) as the primary poverty measure for policy assessment, supplemented by other indicators for more accurate analyses. Empirical evidence shows a reduction of 271 million people leaving multidimensional poverty within a decade, with the poorest of the poor experiencing the largest reductions due to falling intensity levels. Analysis also reveals the importance of probing headcount ratio and number of poor statistics, as well as establishing the relationship between MPI and H through the distribution of attainment scores.

Migration, externalities, and the diffusion of COVID-19 in South Asia

Summary: The study examines the relationship between migrant movements and the spread of COVID-19 in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, finding that international out-migration predicts an increase in cases per capita in India and Pakistan but not in Bangladesh. Domestic out-migration predicts COVID-19 diffusion in India, with the association between COVID-19 cases and international out-migration strengthening over time in all three countries. The results suggest the use of migration data to predict coronavirus hotspots and highlight the negative externalities of containment policies in migrant receiving countries.
