Early childhood internalizing problems, externalizing problems and their co-occurrence and (mal)adaptive functioning in emerging adulthood: a 16-year follow-up study

Summary: A large amount of studies have shown that internalizing or externalizing problems are related to individual functioning, and often co-occur. This study found that early childhood externalizing problems were associated with maladaptive and adaptive functioning over a 16-year time span. The interaction of internalizing and externalizing problems reported by fathers was related to aggressive behavior.

Differences were found in specific bullying behaviors, but they were discrete, discouraging the use of clearly differentiated preventive strategies for boys and girls.
