Innovation agglomeration and urban hierarchy: evidence from Chinese cities

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: Innovation agglomeration leads to changes in the hierarchical structure of innovation, driving regional economic development. We establish a general equilibrium framework for urban innovation, and empirically analyze 286 prefecture level Chinese cities to evaluate the impact of urban tier on innovation agglomeration. The main results show that the spatial structure of innovation in Chinese cities is consistent with the urban tier, and the impact of city scale on innovation agglomeration is nonlinear, with the higher agglomeration of innovation resources in high-tier cities.

Transformation effect of resource-based cities based on PSM-DID model: An empirical analysis from China

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: The implementation of the National Plan for Resource-based City Sustainable Development has promoted economic, social, and ecological transformation, but did not have additional effects on sustainable resource utilization. Market development is the driving factor that affects all forms of transformation the most, and the impact of this transformation varies by stages of urban development according to the full life cycle of the resource-based city and its local resources.

Spatial effect of innovation efficiency on ecological footprint: City-level empirical evidence from China

Haiqian Ke et al.

Summary: This study uses improved data envelopment analysis (DEA) to investigate the innovation efficiency of 280 cities in China and its impact on ecological footprint. The findings show that promoting innovation efficiency can significantly inhibit ecological footprint in both local and neighbouring regions. Innovative cities have a stronger inhibitory effect on ecological footprint compared to non-innovative cities, with eastern and central cities benefiting from improved innovation efficiency while the western region experiences a promoting effect.

Does high-speed railway promote regional innovation growth or innovation convergence?

Xuehui Yang et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes an endogenous innovation growth model and DID regression analysis to find that high-speed railway significantly promotes innovation growth and innovation convergence in China. The number of stations or lines connection affects innovation growth, and the time bandwidth also impacts the robustness of the conclusion. High-speed railway has driven innovation development in eastern, central, and western China, with an innovation spillover distance of 300 km.
