The role of values in coping with health and economic threats of COVID-19

Edward P. Lemay et al.

Summary: This research examined the role of values in guiding people's responses to COVID-19. The study found that health threats predict prioritization of communal values related to caring for others and belonging, while economic threats predict prioritization of agentic values focused on competition and achievement. Prioritizing communal values over agentic values was associated with prevention behaviors, motivations to help others suffering from the pandemic, and positive attitudes toward outgroup members. These findings suggest that COVID-19 threats indirectly shape important responses to the pandemic through their influence on people's prioritization of communal and agentic values.

Invincibility threatens vaccination intentions during a pandemic

James M. Leonhardt et al.

Summary: Some people perceive themselves as invincible to COVID-19, which can undermine community efforts to achieve herd immunity. Research finds that this perception is negatively associated with belief in the need to prevent disease spread and willingness to get vaccinated, especially in countries with lower cultural collectivism like the USA, UK, and Canada. The interplay of individual and cultural factors is crucial in understanding and promoting preventative health behavior during a pandemic.

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and hesitancy in low- and middle-income countries

Julio S. Solis Arce et al.

Summary: The acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines in LMICs is higher compared to the United States and Russia, with a focus on personal protection and concerns about side effects. Healthcare workers are the most trusted sources of guidance in LMICs for COVID-19 vaccines, suggesting that prioritizing vaccine distribution to these countries could help advance global immunization coverage.
