(Re)creating family and reinforcing pedagogies of the home: How familial capital manifests for Students of Color pursuing STEM majors

Erica Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study examines the manifestation of familial capital among Students of Color pursuing STEM majors in northeastern US universities. The findings indicate that students extend their cultural notions of family to create familial relationships and spaces on campus, which serve as conduits for activating their familial capital. Additionally, familial capital manifests through the transmission and reinforcement of home pedagogies on campus, fostering a commitment to communities and working towards community resilience.

Missed Opportunity for Diversity in Engineering: Black Women and Undergraduate Engineering Degree Attainment

Trina L. Fletcher et al.

Summary: Efforts to increase participation of underrepresented groups in engineering at post-secondary institutions have been made in recent decades. However, Black women still face inequality in undergraduate engineering degree attainment. Analyzing data from the U.S. Department of Education, it was found that the percentage of engineering degrees awarded to Black women has slightly decreased in the past five years compared to women of all races. Nevertheless, the percentage of Black women obtaining engineering degrees has increased compared to the general Black engineering population, surpassing other ethnicities. This paper aims to provide recommendations for research to improve understanding of the enrollment and retention of Black women in engineering at post-secondary institutions.

Racism camouflaged as impostorism and the impact on black STEM doctoral students

Ebony O. McGee et al.

Summary: Black doctoral students in engineering and computing fields experience racialized stress, which is often attributed to impostorism but is actually caused by racism. Campus administrators peddle impostorism as a cover for racism, placing blame on students and ignoring systemic racism in STEM.

Understanding Differences in Underrepresented Minorities and First-Generation Student Perceptions in the Introductory Biology Classroom

Jacob Jantzer et al.

Summary: Using quantitative methods, we found that underrepresented minorities and first-generation students in a small liberal arts college have decreased sense of belonging and increased perceptions of exclusion in an introductory biology course, which may contribute to disparities in grades and attrition rates in STEM fields.

Social Capital From Professional Engineering Organizations and the Persistence of Women and Underrepresented Minority Undergraduates

Chrystal A. S. Smith et al.

Summary: Research has shown that underrepresented and minoritized (URM) students who participate in professional engineering organizations (PEOs) and other engineering-related activities are more likely to persist in their engineering major. These students reported that PEOs help them network, reduce gender and race/ethnic isolation, and access professional resources to support their persistence.

Predicting academic and career choice: The role of transformative experience, connection to instructor, and gender accounting for interest/identity and contextual factors

Kevin J. Pugh et al.

Summary: In this study, the social-cognitive choice model was used to investigate academic and career choices in geoscience for male and female students. Interest and identification with geoscience were found to be important predictors of outcomes, while the connection to instructors significantly increased model fit. For female students, transformative experiences played a crucial role in predicting outcomes and mediating the relationship between interest/identity and outcomes.

Detailing Racialized and Gendered Mechanisms of Undergraduate Precalculus and Calculus Classroom Instruction

Luis A. Leyva et al.

Summary: Undergraduate mathematics education among historically marginalized students can be discouraging and marginalizing, with precalculus and calculus courses acting as gatekeepers. Student perceptions of instruction in these courses reveal issues of stereotyping and representation, which impact their engagement in STEM fields. Emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive opportunities and support in mathematics education, the study identifies racialized and gendered mechanisms that contribute to attrition in STEM pursuits.
