Phosphorus recovery using magnesium-enriched biochar and its potential use as fertilizer

Barbara Olinda Nardis et al.

Summary: Recovering phosphorus from wastewater using biochar enriched with magnesium ions enhances P removal efficiency and shows potential as a fertilizer. Different biochars exhibit varying phosphorus adsorption capacities, with mechanisms including ion precipitation, ligand exchange reactions, and electrostatic attraction. Phosphorus-loaded biochars promote plant growth and phosphorus accumulation in plants, comparable or even better than traditional triple superphosphate.

Contrasting short-term responses of soil heterotrophic and autotrophic respiration to biochar-based and chemical fertilizers in a subtropical Moso bamboo plantation

Shaobo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of biochar-based fertilizer and chemical fertilizer on soil respiration in subtropical Moso bamboo plantations, finding that soil respiration shows obvious seasonal variations regardless of treatment. Chemical fertilizer significantly increases heterotrophic respiration, while biochar decreases it. Additionally, soil respiration is exponentially related to soil temperature, with chemical fertilizer having a greater impact on respiration.

Application of biochar-coated urea controlled loss of fertilizer nitrogen and increased nitrogen use efficiency

Yiman Jia et al.

Summary: The use of biochar-coated urea (BCU) can reduce nitrogen loss by minimizing nitrate leaching and increasing nitrogen uptake, leading to a 20% improvement in NUE compared to urea. However, BCU may also enhance ammonia volatilization. Further research is needed to explore the dose-effect relationship of BCU on crop yield at field scale.

Summary: Incorporating phosphorus into an organic matrix can increase plant P use efficiency in high P-fixing soils. Biochar-based fertilizers enriched with phosphoric acid and magnesium oxide can replace conventional soluble P fertilizers without compromising crop yield. Combining different ratios of BBF and TSP can result in higher agronomic effectiveness and P uptake.

A novel maize biochar-based compound fertilizer for immobilizing cadmium and improving soil quality and maize growth

Zhifan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel biochar-based compound fertilizer was synthesized and its effects on the immobilization of available cadmium, soil fertility and maize growth were investigated. Results showed that low doses of the compound fertilizer significantly reduced Cd availability in soil and improved soil fertility and maize growth. The increase of pyrolysis temperature enhanced the biochar adsorption capacity for Cd2+ and the modification of urea, diatomite, and triple superphosphate played a vital role in cadmium immobilization, soil improvement, and maize growth.

A potential Mg-enriched biochar fertilizer: Excellent slow-release performance and release mechanism of nutrients

Weichen Luo et al.

Summary: The Mg-enriched biochar fertilizer (MBF) demonstrated excellent slow-release performances of total P and N, with mechanisms involving Mg-P precipitates and 'P-trap' effect of MgO for P-release, as well as confinement effect and electrostatic attraction for N-release. MBF significantly promoted corn growth and enhanced nutrient uptake efficiency, suggesting promising potential for sustainable agriculture with multiple environmental benefits.

Biochar-based fertilizer decreased while chemical fertilizer increased soil N2O emissions in a subtropical Moso bamboo plantation

Jiashu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study conducted a field trial to investigate the impact of biochar-based fertilizer on soil N2O emissions in a subtropical Moso bamboo plantation. The results showed that biochar decreased N2O emissions by lowering WSON concentration and N-cycling enzyme activity in soils. These findings suggest that biochar application could be an effective strategy for mitigating N2O emissions in subtropical plantation soils.
