National scale predictions of contemporary and future blue carbon storage

Mary A. Young et al.

Summary: Various nature-based solutions are being explored to mitigate the impacts of climate change, including the protection and restoration of vegetated coastal ecosystems such as tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows. By using machine learning approaches, reliable soil carbon stock maps in VCEs have been generated, revealing a total of 951 Tg of carbon stock within Australian VCEs. Future projections show potential declines in soil carbon stocks for mangrove/tidal marsh ecosystems, but increases in seagrass ecosystems under predicted climate change scenarios.

Synthesis and evaluation of coastal and marine biodiversity spatial information in the United Arab Emirates for ecosystem-based management

D. Mateos-Molina et al.

Summary: This study mapped and validated the distribution of key coastal and marine habitats, species, and critical areas in the Gulf area of the UAE, identifying gaps in current protection and assessing data quality. Existing protected areas are insufficient to safeguard key ecological features, such as mangroves and coastal lagoons, highlighting the need for improved conservation planning and ecosystem-based management.
