Sex, gender and gender identity: a re-evaluation of the evidence

Lucy Griffin et al.

Summary: The article discusses the rapid increase in gender diversity, particularly in children and young people, over the past decade, as well as the evolving terminology around transgender health and the role of psychiatry in treating this condition no longer classified as a mental illness. The concept of conversion therapy in relation to alternative gender identities is critically examined, with reference to psychiatry's historical relationship with conversion therapy for homosexuality. The authors highlight the uncertainties clinicians face when dealing with a condition that is no longer classified as a disorder or mental condition, yet for which medical interventions are frequently sought and mental health comorbidities are common.
