What Is the US Comparative Advantage in Entrepreneurship? Evidence from Israeli Migration to the United States

Annamaria Conti et al.

Summary: We examine the advantages of the US entrepreneurial ecosystem compared to other innovative economies by studying the benefits received by Israeli startups when they migrate to the United States. Our findings reveal that migrants receive higher amounts of funding, are more likely to have a US trademark, and have a higher chance of being acquired compared to non-migrants. However, their patent output does not increase significantly. We conclude that the US entrepreneurial ecosystem's advantage stems from investor availability, as well as the presence of large consumer and acquisitions markets, leading to substantial gains for startups.

OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE, ACQUISITIONS AND EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION: EVIDENCE FROM PUBLICLY LISTED CHINESE COMPANIES

Lili Kang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between acquisitions and executive compensation using panel data from China's publicly listed companies (PLCs). The findings suggest that acquisitions lead to a significant increase in executive compensation, with a stronger effect observed in state-owned PLCs compared to private-owned PLCs. The study also reveals that state ownership and shareholding concentration contribute to higher executive compensation, indicating the presence of a principal-principal problem. Additionally, the analysis shows that the compensation-increasing effect of acquisitions is more pronounced for top executive managers than top board directors.

Dynamics of regional diversification: a new approach using trademark data

Eric J. Iversen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an approach using trademark data to study regional diversification, revealing that density has a moderate effect on trademarking intensity and confirming a strong relationship between new firm formation and regional diversification. These effects vary by sector and are sensitive to industry-level employment and turnover. Lastly, the analysis shows distinct differences in regional diversification between urban and peripheral regions.

Trademarks, patents and the appropriation strategies of incumbents: the scope of new firm formation in European regions

Rene A. Belderbos et al.

Summary: The analysis reveals that regional knowledge stocks represented by patents positively influence new firm formation, but knowledge protection and appropriation strategies of incumbents have a discouraging effect. Trademarks can result in higher entry rates when incumbents lack pronounced appropriation strategies or when new entrants do not directly compete with trademarking incumbents, highlighting the dual effects of trademarks as indicators of product novelties and potential expressions of strengthened incumbent appropriation strategies.
