Purpose Trajectories During Middle Adolescence: The Roles of Family, Teacher, and Peer Support

Purpose profiles among Chinese adolescents: Association with personal characteristics, parental support, and psychological adjustment

Summary: This study examines the experiences and development of purpose engagement among adolescents in collectivist cultural contexts. Through a person-centered approach, 450 Chinese adolescents were categorized into clusters based on their similarities in purpose exploration and commitment. The findings indicate that adolescents with Achieved profiles are the most adaptive, while those with Diffused profiles are the least adaptive. Adolescents with Uncommitted and Foreclosed profiles fall between the two groups. The linkages between purpose profiles, personal characteristics, parental support, and psychological adjustment have important implications for parents and adults working with adolescents.
