The inverse relationship between farm size and productivity: Refocusing the debate

Steven M. Helfand et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the importance of choosing productivity measures in the literature regarding the inverse relationship, suggesting that total factor productivity (TFP) is the appropriate indicator for most policy questions. By analyzing data from Brazilian farms, it is found that there is an inverse relationship between farm size and land productivity, while the relationship between TFP and size shows a U-shaped trend or even positive correlation.

The impact of farm scale and technology characteristics on the adoption of sustainable manure management technologies: Evidence from hog production in China

Dan Pan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a survey of 686 hog farms in the Poyang Lake Region in China to investigate the impact of farm scale and technology characteristics on sustainable manure management technologies (SMMTs) adoption. Results show significant heterogeneity in SMMTs adoption across different farm scales, with small-scale farms preferring land-intensive and labor-intensive technologies, while medium-scale and large-scale farms favor capital-intensive and knowledge-intensive technologies. Variables related to labor, capital, land, and knowledge are key determinants of adoption heterogeneity among farms.

Impact of farm size on intensity of pesticide use: Evidence from China

Wei Zhu et al.

Summary: The average amount of pesticides used per hectare in China is roughly five times the world average. Farm size has a significant negative impact on the intensity of pesticide use, with a 1% increase in farm size associated with a 0.2% decrease in pesticide use per hectare. Promoting the development of relatively large-scale farms can help reduce the intensity of pesticide use in China.
