Standing electric scooter injuries: Impact on a community

Matthew B. Bloom et al.

Summary: This study investigated standing electric scooter-related injuries in an entire integrated hospital system, finding that loss of balance was the most common cause of injury and emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets to prevent head injuries. The study suggested further research on policies related to mandated safety equipment, dedicated bicycle lanes, and proper storage of empty vehicles.

Craniofacial and dental injuries associated with stand-up electric scooters

Minsik Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated traumatic injuries to the craniofacial region related to e-scooter accidents in Korea. Among 256 patients evaluated, 48.8% had sustained craniofacial trauma, with laceration being the most common type of injury. Dentists play an important role in evaluating and treating patients with trauma from e-scooter accidents, and educating riders on the importance of wearing protective gear is essential to prevent such injuries.

Orthopedic injuries associated with use of electric scooters in the UK: A dangerous trend? Case series and review of the literature

George J. M. Hourston et al.

Summary: Electric scooters are increasingly popular in major urban areas worldwide, but concerns about orthopedic injuries associated with their use have been raised. This study reviewed records from a Level 1 Major Trauma Center in the UK over two years, revealing a rising frequency of significant orthopedic injuries related to e-scooter use, with half of the patients requiring surgical intervention.

The role of micro-mobility in shaping sustainable cities: A systematic literature review

Rusul L. Abduljabbar et al.

Summary: Micro-mobility is gaining recognition as a promising mode of urban transport, but existing research is fragmented. This paper consolidates knowledge on the topic through a systematic literature review of 328 journal publications, identifying four main research themes and future research directions. The analysis of citations and co-citations reveals the changing landscape of micro-mobility research and highlights its importance as a low-carbon mode of urban transport.

E-scooter sharing to serve short-distance transit trips: A Singapore case

Zhejing Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of using e-scooter sharing to replace short-distance transit trips and analyzes the trade-offs between serving more e-scooter trips and making more revenue for e-scooter companies. Results show that factors such as fare, MRT transfer, and walking distance significantly impact mode preferences, and male, young, and high-income groups exhibit more heterogeneity in e-scooter preferences. Recommendations are provided on how to balance mode share and revenue for different trade-off situations.

Assessing the Willingness to Use Personal e-Transporters (PeTs): Results from a Cross-National Survey in Nine European Cities

Tim De Ceunynck et al.

Summary: There has been a strong increase in interest and usage of Personal e-Transporters (PeTs) in recent years, but empirical research on their usage as a transport mode in Europe is virtually non-existent. A large-scale survey was conducted in nine European cities to investigate people's motivations and barriers to the use of PeTs. Results show that perceptions of PeTs are generally unfavorable, with factors like cost and safety being significant barriers. Various factors influence the stage of behavioral change in respondents, including cycling norms, walking behavior, gender, etc.

The E-Scooter Potential to Change Urban Mobility-Belgrade Case Study

Drazenko Glavic et al.

Summary: This paper examines e-scooter users' travel patterns, willingness of standard scooter users to switch to e-scooters in different scenarios, and factors influencing the users' willingness to switch. The results show a significant difference in users' willingness to use e-scooters depending on available infrastructure, with factors like transport mode used before and during the COVID-19 pandemic impacting users' willingness to switch.

Comparing the risky behaviours of shared and private e-scooter and bicycle riders in downtown Brisbane, Australia

Narelle Haworth et al.

Summary: The study conducted in downtown Brisbane, Australia, highlighted the prevalence of illegal riding and non-use of helmets among shared e-scooters and bicycles, as well as the frequent interactions with pedestrians. Shared schemes tend to have higher rates of risky behaviors, especially with e-scooters, but conflicts with pedestrians are rare. Further research is recommended to better understand the factors influencing the behaviors of shared and private e-scooter users and pedestrians to improve safety regulations.
