Assessing risk factors associated with urban transit bus involved accident severity: a case study of a Middle East country

Mehrdad Nasri et al.

Summary: The study investigated the risk factors associated with the severity of urban transit bus accidents in Mashhad, Iran, indicating that factors such as speed limit and vulnerable road users are positively correlated with bus accident severity. Results also showed that accidents occurring at bus stops and roundabouts decrease the probability of injury or fatality compared to accidents on roadway segments.

Investigating factors affecting bus/minibus accident severity in a developing country for different subgroup datasets characterised by time, pavement, and light conditions

Reuben Tamakloe et al.

Summary: Developing countries face challenges with poor roadway and lighting infrastructure, impacting their traffic accident fatality rates. Risky driving behaviors by bus/minibus drivers during weekends when surveillance is low to maximize profits further increase these rates. This study investigates the effects of contributing factors on the severity of bus/minibus accidents in Ghana under various pavement and light conditions, highlighting the differences between weekdays and weekends. Insights from this research can inform engineers and policymakers on improving traffic safety in developing nations.

Rule discovery to identify patterns contributing to overrepresentation and severity of run-off-the-road crashes

Alfonso Montella et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 6167 crashes that occurred on a section of the A16 motorway in Italy from 2001 to 2011, identifying 94 significant rules for run-off-the-road crashes and 129 significant rules for severe and fatal injury crashes. The rules represent combinations of factors associated with the overrepresentation of frequency and severity of these crashes, highlighting the need for a combination of countermeasures to address safety issues.

Frictions of everyday mobility: traffic, transport and gendered confrontations on the roads of Accra

Maya Moller-Jensen

Summary: This article examines how daily mobility experiences impact women in Accra and shape their perception of the city and opportunities it provides. Despite the importance of being mobile for work and identity, women in Accra face challenges such as traffic congestion and gendered confrontations, which affect their ability to plan their lives and move freely in the city. This perspective highlights the significance of socio-material structures in shaping urban mobility and the resulting impact on women's lives and perceptions of the city.

Data mining approach to model bus crash severity in Australia

Seyed Alireza Samerei et al.

Summary: The study analyzed bus involved crash data in the State of Victoria, Australia from 2006 to 2019, finding higher fatality rates in crashes with non-motor vehicles and on weekends. Factors contributing to these fatal crashes include old bus drivers, collisions with pedestrians at signalized intersections, and the presence of vulnerable road users. Recommendations to reduce fatality risk include improving lighting conditions, implementing speed bumps and rumble strips, and installing pedestrian detection systems on buses.

Why Africa cannot prosecute (or even educate) its way out of road accidents: insights from Ghana

Festival Godwin Boateng

Summary: The paper highlights the issue of penal populism being used as a measure for tackling road trauma in Africa, emphasizing the need to shift focus from punishing drivers to addressing broader societal systems. It argues that ineffective public transportation systems, expensive roads, driver exploitation, police corruption, and traffic congestions are key underlying factors contributing to safety-adverse driving culture in the continent. The paper also critiques the enforcement-heavy approach, essentializing African drivers as having a danger-prone driving culture, and calls for a more holistic approach to addressing road safety issues in Africa.
