Social Comparisons in Real Time: A Field Experiment of Residential Electricity and Water Use*

Summary: This study conducted a field experiment to investigate how social comparisons influence residential energy and water use. The results indicated that providing social comparisons can reduce daily residential energy consumption significantly, but has no effect on overall residential water use.
