Krithika Randhawa et al.

Summary: This article examines how middle managers leveraged design thinking for innovation to respond to inertia and shift the cognitive frame of the organization toward an ambidextrous innovation portfolio. The study found that implementing creative problem-solving, sprint execution, and creative confidence practices can help transition the organization's cognitive frame to ultimately achieve an ambidextrous innovation frame. By deploying different design thinking practices and generative mechanisms flexibly, organizations can adapt to interim innovation objectives over time and trigger a generative response to inertia.
