Differences in the impact of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance - Mediating role of innovation performance

T. Y. Leung et al.

Summary: This study examines the mediating role of innovation performance in the effects of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance, finding that R&D intensity has a negative impact on short-term profitability but a positive impact on long-term firm value, while R&D internationalization positively affects export performance. Innovation performance (measured by number of patents) partially mediates the impact of R&D intensity and R&D internationalization on firm performance, with these effects varying based on firm age and size. These findings have important implications for firms, especially those from emerging markets with international R&D operations or aiming to internationalize their R&D activities.

Cross-border acquisition performance of emerging market multinational enterprises: The moderating role of state-ownership and acquisition experience

Vijay Pereira et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of state ownership and acquisition experience on the performance of emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) using the resource-based view and organizational learning theory. It finds an inverted U-shape relationship between diversification through cross-border acquisitions and firm performance, with greater impact in developed countries. State ownership and EMNE acquisition experience moderate these relationships in both domestic and foreign markets.

Summary: Using a unique dataset, the study explores the internationalization processes of Chinese private sector firms. It shows that firm-specific advantages, such as productivity, proprietary knowledge, and technology competence, can explain Chinese private foreign direct investment similarly to FDI from western developed countries. Moreover, firm-specific advantages like technology leadership, exporting experience, and ability to signal quality to partners abroad can explain the outward FDI motivations of Chinese private firms.
