Towards a Native OPERA Hypothesis: Musicianship and English Stress Perception

William Choi

Summary: This study found that musical experience can enhance stress discrimination among native listeners, with musicians showing superior performance compared to non-musicians in an English stress discrimination task. The advantage was observed for both trochaic and iambic stress patterns, with differential use of acoustic cues by musicians for iambic stress and enhanced durational sensitivity for trochaic stress.

Cantonese advantage on English stress perception: Constraints and neural underpinnings

William Choi

Summary: The study found that Cantonese listeners outperformed English listeners on English stress perception, but this advantage disappeared when segmental variations were introduced. Neurophysiologically, segmental variations diminished the P3b amplitudes of Cantonese but not English listeners.

Effects of language experience on domain-general perceptual strategies

Kyle Jasmin et al.

Summary: Speech and music, being highly redundant communication systems, can resist noise interference, but listeners need to develop perceptual strategies to determine the importance of different sources of information. Empirical evidence suggests that cue weighting in auditory perception is influenced by within-task statistical learning, global biases, and local (task-specific) learning, with individuals possibly adjusting cue weights based on their experiences.
