Surface/Interface Structure and Chemistry of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: From Density Functional Theory Calculations' Perspective

Jiadong Shen et al.

Summary: The rapid development of portable electronic products and low-emission electric vehicles has increased the demand for energy-storage systems. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with ultra-high energy density are considered promising for next-generation rechargeable batteries, but face challenges such as low sulfur conductivity and lithium dendrite formation. Research shows that the surface/interface structure and chemistry of sulfur host materials are crucial for Li-S battery performance, with functional hosts used to prevent shuttle effects and enhance reaction kinetics. The use of density functional theory (DFT) helps understand the interaction between hosts and polysulfides, demonstrating the importance of surface/interfacial factors in Li-S battery research.
