Numerical study of roughness model effect including low-Reynolds number model and wall function method at actual ship scale

Kunihide Ohashi

Summary: A numerical study was conducted to investigate roughness effects at an actual ship scale, using low-Reynolds number roughness models based on a two-equation turbulence model and a wall function method. The roughness models were validated through experiments on a 2D flat plate and a full-scale ship, showing better performance of the wall function method at full scale.

An Open-Water Efficiency Based Speed Change Strategy With Propeller Lifespan Enhancement in All-Electric Ships

Saman Nasiri et al.

Summary: This article proposes an improved propeller control strategy for increasing/decreasing the ship's speed, which consists of a maximum acceleration strategy and an efficient operation strategy, ensuring economic efficiency, stability, reliability, and power quality of the ship's power system. By introducing a mechanical index LoL to compare the performance of various speed change strategies, simulations show that the proposed scheme decreases propeller mechanical wear and tear to about 1.8 percent of conventional methods, ultimately increasing its lifespan.
