Probing the Analogy between Living Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly and Living Covalent Polymerizations: Length-Independent Growth Behavior for 1D Block Copolymer Nanofibers

Shixing Lei et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the growth of one-dimensional fiber-like structures and found that there was no significant correlation between fiber length and growth rate. This suggests that the low size dispersities characteristic of living crystallization-driven self-assembly processes do not result from a gradual reduction in growth rate with fiber length, supporting the previously proposed explanation based on an analogy with living covalent polymerizations of molecular monomers.

Spherulite-Like Micelles

Shaofei Song et al.

Summary: By crystallization-driven self-assembly, a BCP containing an amphiphilic ferrocenyldimethylsilane can form 3D structures similar to spherulites in decane, with externally spherical symmetry but asymmetric core structure consisting of sheaf-like leaves. The amount of added unimer determines the growth stoppage at different stages of the seeded growth experiment.

An Amphiphilic Corona-Forming Block Promotes Formation of a Variety of 2D Platelets via Crystallization-Driven Block Copolymer Self-Assembly

Shaofei Song et al.

Summary: Crystallization-driven self-assembly of a poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) (PFS) block copolymer with amphiphilic pendant groups was studied by varying the block ratio and using a wide range of solvents. The self-assembly in different solvents resulted in various morphologies, such as rounded rectangular platelets in 2-propanol and leaf-shaped structures in 1-octanol. The addition of unimers led to the formation of 3D circular spirals in 1-pentanol, indicating solvent-dependent morphological transitions.

Summary: By studying the homogeneous nucleation of block copolymers, it was found that spontaneous nucleation can be suppressed at 40 degrees Celsius, enabling efficient living crystallization-driven self-assembly to produce nanofibers with controllable lengths and low dispersity. This technique also allowed the preparation of B-A-B triblock comicelles and multiarm starlike arrays of fiberlike micelles with variable arm lengths.

Transformation from Rod-Like to Diamond-Like Micelles by Thermally Induced Nucleation Self-Assembly

Heng Li et al.

Summary: By introducing chlorine into the poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) core, a series of 1D rod-like micelles with controlled sizes were produced, and the transformation from 1D rod-like micelles to 2D uniform diamond-like micelles was achieved through thermally induced nucleation SA. The sizes of the 2D diamond-like micelles could be tuned by the annealing temperature and the ratio of unimer to seed, and the morphology transformation was based on energetics including thermodynamic and kinetic points.
