Microscopic evidence for Mn-induced long range magnetic ordering in MAX phase compounds

A. Maniv et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of long-range magnetic order in (Cr0.96Mn0.04)(2)GeC and (Cr0.93Mn0.07)(2)GaC, but not in (Cr0.97Mn0.03)(2)GaC. The results suggest a possible connection between long-range magnetic order in these MAX phase compounds and the A atom.

Corrosion mechanism of Ti2AlC MAX phase coatings under the synergistic effects of water vapor and solid NaCl at 600 °C

Zhenyu Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of Ti2AlC MAX phase coatings on 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV substrates in NaCl deposit in water vapor at 600 degrees C was investigated. The substrates experienced serious corrosion, while the coatings showed better performance, with less mass gain per unit area due to the formation of a dense and uniform corrosion scale. The corrosion scale, composed of NaxTiyOz fine grains and amorphous Al2O3 phases, self-healed defects during corrosion, benefiting from the novel layered structure of MAX phase.

Pulsed laser deposition of epitaxial Cr2AlC MAX phase thin films on MgO(111) and Al2O3(0001)

Marc Stevens et al.

Summary: Pulsed Laser Deposition was used to grow phase pure and epitaxial Cr2AlC MAX phase thin films on MgO(111) and Al2O3(0001). The results demonstrate the potential of this method for the growth of epitaxial MAX phase thin films, with the film thickness affecting the material properties significantly.

Structure determination and magnetic properties of the Mn-doped MAX phase Cr2GaC

Jan P. Siebert et al.

Summary: Introducing magnetic elements into the structure of layered ternary transition metal-based carbides can lead to magnetic ordering phenomena, but synthesizing manganese or iron-containing MAX phases is challenging. Thin film community leads in synthesizing MAX phases with magnetic ordering, while producing bulk samples for studying complex magnetic properties remains a major obstacle, particularly using conventional high-temperature methods.
