Green spaces, quality of life, and citizen perception in European cities

Vincenzo Giannico et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between green spaces and citizens' quality of life, environment, social inclusion, and urban management in 51 European cities, as well as the moderating role of per capita income. The results confirm the positive influence of green spaces on citizens' quality of life, with a more pronounced effect in lower-income cities.

Machine Learning Techniques for Fine Dead Fuel Load Estimation Using Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data

Marina D'Este et al.

Summary: A model using remote sensing data and machine learning techniques to estimate fine dead fuel load was developed, with the Random Forest model showing higher predictive power compared to Support Vector Machine and Multiple Linear Regression models. LIDAR variables were found to be more important in fuel estimation than optical and radar variables, and there was a positive relationship between 1-h fuel load and the presence of the tree component.

A data-based approach to identifying regional typologies and exemplars across the urban-rural gradient in Europe using affinity propagation

Maurizio Fiaschetti et al.

Summary: This study utilizes recent developments in data-mining and statistics, applying affinity propagation algorithm to identify regional typologies in the EU and investigate main factors contributing to rural-urban differences. By incorporating climate and land-cover/land-use variables, representative 'exemplars' are identified within each cluster to pinpoint differences driven by natural and human-natural landscapes. Building on previous works, a threshold-less, data-driven model is introduced to identify exemplars and main characteristics of each cluster or regional typology.
