What are the best endpoints for Eczema Area and Severity Index and Scoring Atopic Dermatitis in clinical practice? A prospective observational study

J. I. Silverberg et al.

Summary: Multiple strategies have been used to evaluate the minimal important change (MIC) of the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD). The meaningfulness of these MICs is not well established across all severities of atopic dermatitis (AD). EASI 50, SCORAD 35 and O-SCORAD 35 were meaningful percentage MICs regardless of baseline AD severity, while the absolute MICs for EASI, SCORAD and O-SCORAD varied by baseline AD severity.

Staphylococcus aureus binds to the N-terminal region of corneodesmosin to adhere to the stratum corneum in atopic dermatitis

Aisling M. Towell et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus interacts with the host protein corneodesmosin on atopic dermatitis corneocytes, taking advantage of the aberrant display of corneodesmosin caused by low natural moisturizing factor levels. The bacterial proteins FnBPB and ClfB bind to the N-terminal region of corneodesmosin, facilitating strong adherence of S. aureus to atopic dermatitis corneocytes.

The Skin Microbiome of Patients With Atopic Dermatitis Normalizes Gradually During Treatment

Veda D. Khadka et al.

Summary: Patients with atopic dermatitis have high levels of Staphylococcus aureus in their skin microbiome, which decrease with treatment. The addition of dilute bleach baths significantly reduces S. aureus burden and could be a therapeutic option for AD patients. Further research in double-blinded trials is needed to confirm these findings.

Changes in Skin and Nasal Microbiome and Staphylococcal Species Following Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis with Dupilumab

Caroline Meyer Olesen et al.

Summary: The study found that treatment with dupilumab led to significant changes in the skin microbiome of AD patients, with a decrease in Staphylococcus aureus and an increase in Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus hominis. Clinical symptoms improved significantly, suggesting a beneficial role of commensal staphylococci in AD.
