Human soluble ACE2 improves the effect of remdesivir in SARS-CoV-2 infection

Vanessa Monteil et al.

Summary: The combination therapy of remdesivir with recombinant soluble ACE2 shows significant therapeutic effects against SARS-CoV-2 in both cell and kidney organoid models. By targeting two different modalities of the virus's life cycle, this approach improves therapeutic windows. The study lays the groundwork for investigating combinatorial regimens in future COVID-19 clinical trials.

New Horizons: Does Mineralocorticoid Receptor Activation by Cortisol Cause ATP Release and COVID-19 Complications?

Christopher Edwards

Summary: This paper explores how the SARS-CoV-2 virus causes severe complications in COVID-19 patients. It suggests that cortisol-associated MR activation leads to the release of ATP, affecting disease progression. Factors such as gender, age, race, diabetes, BMI, and blood type are also found to influence the disease outcomes.

Soluble (pro)renin receptor: a novel ligand for angiotensin II type 1 receptor?

Keiichi Torimoto et al.

Summary: The study highlights the role of sPRR as a ligand for AT1R, causing endothelial dysfunction and hypertension. The interaction between sPRR and AT1R contributes to obesity-induced cardiovascular diseases. The sPRR/AT1R complex may be a potential therapeutic target for endothelial dysfunction.

Summary: This study found that the use of ACE inhibitors or ARBs is not associated with increased risk of hospitalization or all-cause mortality among patients with hypertension and COVID-19 infection. The association remained consistent across different racial/ethnic groups. The use of ACE inhibitors or ARBs during hospitalization was actually associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality.

Between two storms, vasoactive peptides or bradykinin underlie severity of COVID-19?

Vardan T. Karamyan

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a global pandemic with significant socioeconomic impact. Inflammation is a major cause of complications, with studies focusing on pro-inflammatory cytokines and recently emerging peptide bradykinin as primary mechanisms. Besides bradykinin, substance P and neurotensin may also drive disease severity, and simultaneous inhibition of all three peptidergic systems could be therapeutically advantageous.
