Biological Control and Mitigation of Aflatoxin Contamination in Commodities

Ferenc Peles et al.

Summary: This article reviews different control methods for aflatoxins, including biological control by bacteria, yeasts, and fungi, pre-harvest biocontrol technologies, and post-harvest technologies based on biological agents. These methods can help us reduce aflatoxin contamination in feed and food.

The antagonistic Metschnikowia andauensis produces extracellular enzymes and pulcherrimin, whose production can be promoted by the culture factors

Eniko Horvath et al.

Summary: Biological control using pigment-producing Metschnikowia andauensis as an alternative to fungicidal chemicals can inhibit growth of other microbes, with the production of pulcherrimin being influenced by factors such as glucose, pectin, and certain amino acids.

Application of yeasts and yeast derivatives for the biological control of toxigenic fungi and their toxic metabolites

Zahoor Ul Hassan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that yeasts, particularly Saccharomyces cerevisiae, can effectively inhibit fungal growth, reduce mycotoxin synthesis, and remove mycotoxins from food. Non-fermenting yeasts show significant inhibitory effects on A. flavus growth and aflatoxin synthesis, while Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains exhibit high binding activities against various mycotoxins. Additionally, all yeast cell walls significantly reduce aflatoxin M1 in contaminated milk.

Aflatoxins are natural scavengers of reactive oxygen species

E. Finotti et al.

Summary: The role of aflatoxins in Aspergillus sect. Flavi strains is debated. Research indicates environmental factors can influence its synthesis through redox balance alterations, and its synthesis is mainly controlled at the transcriptional level by reactive species. Aflatoxins can scavenge peroxides and prolong the lifespan of bacteria under oxidative stress.

New Isolated Metschnikowia pulcherrima Strains from Apples for Postharvest Biocontrol of Penicillium expansum and Patulin Accumulation

Laura Settier-Ramirez et al.

Summary: Wild yeasts isolated from the surface of apples were found to have antagonistic activity against Penicillium expansum and can reduce patulin levels in liquid medium. Among them, the Y29 strain showed the best antifungal capacity and patulin degradation ability.

The potential of antagonistic yeasts and bacteria from tomato phyllosphere and fructoplane in the control of Alternaria fruit rot of tomato

Samiya Saleh Al-Maawali et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that yeast Meyerozyma guilliermondii and bacteria Enterobacter roggenkampii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from tomato leaves and fruits have inhibitory activity against Alternaria alternata, reducing fruit rot lesion size effectively. Antifungal metabolites produced by M. guilliermondii, predominantly tricosane and pentacosane, may also contribute to the suppression of A. alternata.
