Microbiota and human allergic diseases: the company we keep

Donata Vercelli

Summary: Environmental, maternal, and early life microbial/immune networks play a crucial role in shaping human developmental trajectories and health outcomes, as well as modifying allergic disease risk. Studies have shown that growing up on traditional farms can confer protection against asthma and allergy, and gut microbiome maturation is associated with the asthma/allergy trajectory. Research in germ-free mice related to human disease states is providing insights into the role of microbiota in immune function and allergic disease susceptibility.

Changing trends in the prevalence of childhood asthma over 40 years in Greece

Alexandros N. Zounas et al.

Summary: The prevalence of childhood wheeze/asthma has significantly decreased over the past decade in Greece. The persistent and noncurrent wheeze/asthma groups followed the overall trend, while the recent-onset wheeze/asthma prevalence remained unchanged. Physicians and parents' changing perceptions of asthma may have contributed to this reversing trend, especially in younger children with troublesome respiratory symptoms.
