Low-Frequency Oscillations in Quantum Cascade Lasers With Tilted Optical Feedback

Bin-Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that tilted optical feedback with a misaligned reflection mirror can trigger quantum cascade lasers to generate low-frequency oscillations, including irregular pulse oscillations and square wave oscillations. The oscillation period is in the microsecond range, generally decreasing with increasing tilt angle, and the duty cycle of the square waves is tunable through varying the tilt angle. It is also noted that weak feedback strength or low pump current results in rare occurrence of pulse oscillations.

Free-Space Communication With Directly Modulated Mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Devices

Olivier Spitz et al.

Summary: This study examines the communication capabilities of two types of semiconductor lasers emitting in the 4 μm range of an atmosphere transparency window. The quantum cascade laser and interband cascade laser were used, with attenuation added to simulate free-space transmission. Different modulation formats were compared for maximum transmission data rate, and sensitivity to optical feedback and error rate were analyzed. The study provides insights into developing secure optical communication links using mid-infrared semiconductor lasers and highlights improvements needed for high-speed communication.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Interband Cascade Laser Subjected to Optical Feedback

Hong Han et al.

Summary: The study shows that the stability of the ICL is significantly influenced by the pump current, linewidth enhancement factor, and stage number. In addition, ICL with fewer stage numbers is more likely to exhibit chaos. Investigating the chaos bandwidth dependences on stage number, pump current, and feedback strength reveals the presence of an 8 GHz bandwidth mid-infrared chaos.

Summary: Future generations of wireless communication systems are expected to achieve significantly faster data transmission and lower latency, with photonics-assisted technologies such as mid-IR free-space communication using semiconductor quantum cascade lasers (QCL) attracting great interest. The ability to directly modulate QCL for high-speed transmission and monolithic integration for compact transceivers make it a promising option for future wireless communications.

Relative intensity noise and intrinsic properties of RF mounted interband cascade laser

P. Didier et al.

Summary: The experimental study focuses on the relative intensity noise of a multi-mode interband cascade laser at 4.1 micrometers, showing a relaxation frequency in the GHz range at room temperature. Results indicate that, above threshold current, relaxation frequency increases with bias current, with simulations matching experimental efforts. Fitting of relative intensity noise resonances provides insight into key parameters of the studied interband cascade laser.

Chaotic behavior of quantum cascade lasers at ignition

D. E. Onder et al.

Summary: The ignition of Quantum Cascade Lasers can occur from a state of oscillating field domains, leading to complex oscillation scenarios. Analysis of numerical findings for devices operating at terahertz frequencies show they can exhibit chaotic behavior with positive Lyapunov exponents even without periodic driving. This highlights the importance of considering chaotic evolution in the design of these devices.

Stimulating polarization switching dynamics in mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers

Olivier Spitz et al.

Summary: Quantum cascade lasers have a unique feature of ultrafast carrier relaxation lifetime and specific electronic transitions, allowing for the stimulation of polarization switching dynamics under cross-polarization reinjection. This generates a modulation signal with a phase shift between TM and TE modes, different from pure time-delay dynamics. By varying the characteristics of the reinjected light, both the frequency and duty cycle of the modulated pattern can be slightly tuned.

Broadband laser chaos generation using a quantum cascade laser with optical feedback

Chaojie Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to generate broadband laser chaos using a QCL, showing evidence that the QCL can route to chaos through a quasi-periodic path with optical feedback. The influence of feedback intensity and bias current on chaos bandwidth is also investigated, revealing a significant bandwidth of 43.1 GHz due to the absence of relaxation oscillation phenomena in QCLs.

Nonlinear dynamics of a quantum cascade laser with tilted optical feedback

Xing-Guang Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that destabilizing quantum cascade lasers can be achieved using optical feedback with a tilted angle, leading to three types of nonlinear dynamics. Small tilted angles result in periodic oscillations, moderate angles result in quasiperiodic oscillations, and large angles result in low-frequency oscillations. This type of dynamics is not observed with well-aligned optical feedback.

Observation of optical feedback dynamics in single-mode terahertz quantum cascade lasers: Transient instabilities

Xiaoqiong Qi et al.

Summary: This study presents experimental evidence of transient instabilities in a terahertz quantum cascade laser under optical feedback, contradicting the widely accepted view of its ultra-stability. The absence of relaxation oscillations and low linewidth enhancement factor in THz QCLs make them uniquely suitable for exploring external-cavity dynamics in semiconductor lasers. These findings open up possibilities for a THz sensing and imaging modality based on these transient instabilities, offering a simpler alternative to existing approaches using laser feedback interferometry.
