Quantifying flow-ecology relationships across flow regime class and ecoregions in South Carolina

Luke M. Bower et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the importance of maintaining all components of the natural flow regime for protecting freshwater biodiversity, as all aspects of the flow regime were found to affect fish and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. By identifying hydrologic metrics associated with the greatest ecological responses, managers can prioritize certain metrics during environmental flow standard development. Additionally, the varying responses of aquatic organisms to hydrologic metrics across stream classifications and ecoregions emphasized the need to consider differences in flow regime and ecoregion when designing environmental flow standards.

Safeguarding freshwater life beyond 2020: Recommendations for the new global biodiversity framework from the European experience

Charles B. van Rees et al.

Summary: Plans are underway for the next decade of action on biodiversity, with a focus on freshwater biodiversity. Despite being disproportionately threatened, freshwater biodiversity has not received enough attention in policies and strategies. It is crucial for future actions to prioritize the unique ecology and threats facing freshwater ecosystems, and to incorporate recommendations based on past experiences and recent literature.

Building resilience into water management through public engagement

Stephen W. Golladay et al.

Summary: Water resources in the US are managed by water utilities and influenced by multiple landowners and land uses. Public engagement with science is seen as an opportunity to enhance sustainability of water resources, with a focus on developing resilient management strategies based on ecological, environmental, and engineering principles.

Mechanisms for engaging social systems in freshwater science research

Damon M. Hall et al.

Summary: Engaging local community members who are experts in the social and ecological systems of freshwater ecosystems can greatly improve scientific research. Researchers should make their projects meaningful to participants in order to facilitate public engagement. Building mutuality with local communities and experts, establishing and maintaining relationships, and ensuring reliable attendance at meetings are key strategies for successful research team engagement with local experts.
