The mortality cost of carbon

R. Daniel Bressler

Summary: This study extends the DICE-2016 IAM to include temperature-related mortality impacts, introducing a metric called the mortality cost of carbon (MCC). The research finds that considering mortality costs significantly increases the social costs of carbon and changes the optimal climate policy timeline. Climate change is expected to impact human mortality, and a new metric for assessing excess deaths from additional CO2 emissions leads to a substantial increase in social costs of carbon.

Ten new insights in climate science 2020-a horizon scan

Erik Pihl et al.

Summary: This summary highlights key findings in climate change research from the past year, including improved understanding of Earth's sensitivity to carbon dioxide, potential carbon emissions from permafrost thaw, weakening carbon uptake in tropical ecosystems, and impacts on water shortages and mental health. Solutions may come from rethinking economic models, rights-based litigation, governance systems, and a new social contract, with opportunities for positive change arising from the disruption caused by COVID-19.
