Summary: This study showed that land-use changes in primary pastures can not only affect the quantity, but also the quality of soil organic matter (SOM) and humic substances (HS). Changes in both quantity and quality of SOM and HS can be used as sensitive indicators of soil degradation and ecological restoration in semi-humid pastures.
