Diversity and Structure of Pelagic Zooplankton (Crustacea, Rotifera) in NE Poland

Maciej Karpowicz et al.

Summary: This study explored the diversity and structure of pelagic zooplankton in 47 lakes in northeastern Poland, identifying 119 species and highlighting the presence of cold-adapted species and potential glacial refugia. The research suggests that stenotherm species can serve as indicators of ecological status in deep lakes and should be considered in monitoring programs. Additionally, the study found a notable absence of Bythotrephes longimanus in the region, with B. brevimanus being the most common representative of the genus.

Transfer efficiency of carbon, nutrients, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in planktonic food webs under different environmental conditions

Maciej Karpowicz et al.

Summary: The study in Polish lakes revealed significant differences in the transfer efficiency of essential substances such as carbon, nutrients, and polyunsaturated fatty acids between phytoplankton and zooplankton. The efficiency varied with trophic status, with oligotrophic lakes showing the highest efficiencies and dystrophic and eutrophic lakes showing the lowest efficiencies. Disturbances like eutrophication and dystrophication were found to decrease the TTE of essential substances in freshwater food webs.

Efficiency of Transfer of Essential Substances from Phytoplankton to Planktonic Crustaceans in Mesotrophic Conditions

I. Yu Feniova et al.

Summary: The efficiency of essential substances transfer from phytoplankton to zooplankton varies, with fatty acids being less efficiently transferred than carbon, and nutrients (especially phosphorus) being transferred more efficiently than carbon. The presence of fish reduces the efficiency of carbon transfer per unit water volume, but not per unit biomass, suggesting that zooplankton quality as a food resource remains unaffected.Efforts should be made to increase the efficiency of essential substances transfer in order to maintain the functioning of the entire trophic web.
