A comparative study of geometric and geostatistical methods for qualitative reserve estimation of limestone deposit

Thomas Busuyi Afeni et al.

Summary: Mining projects, especially those involving limestone deposits, require accurate knowledge of tonnage and grade for planning purposes. This study compared geometric and geostatistical methods for assessing limestone reserves, finding that the geometric method is effective for tonnage estimation while the geostatistical method is more suitable for grade estimation. The research results are crucial for operational management and cement production scheduling based on accurate projection of raw materials.

Novel approach to estimate vertical scale of fluctuation based on CPT data using convolutional neural networks

Jin-Zhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach to estimate vertical scale of fluctuation (SOF) based on limited CPT data. The CNN model showed excellent performance in estimating vertical SOF with low data availability. The proposed scale factor method effectively addressed the mismatch between actual CPT depth and input data depth for the CNN model, enhancing its applicability.

Statistical Interpolation of Spatially Varying but Sparsely Measured 3D Geo-Data Using Compressive Sensing and Variational Bayesian Inference

Tengyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Real geo-data are often three-dimensional and spatially varied. Interpolating these data with sparse measurements remains challenging, especially when the number of measurements is small. This paper proposes a non-parametric approach that combines compressive sensing and variational Bayesian inference to interpolate 3D geo-data with good performance demonstrated in numerical examples.

Seismic site characterization and site response study of Nirsa (India)

Ravindra K. Gupta et al.

Summary: The Nirsa block, a coal mining area and industrial town situated at the border between Jharkhand and West Bengal in India, faces significant seismic risk. By characterizing the top surficial layers using ambient noise data, researchers found that the bedrock depth ranges from 2.7-19.5 meters and Vs30 values vary from 250-950 m/s, with fundamental resonance frequencies between 2-23 Hz. The study also revealed a good correlation between fundamental resonance frequency, peak HVSR amplitude, bedrock depth, and Vs30 values.

Effect of ground surface surcharge on deformational performance of tunnel in spatially variable soil

Jin-Zhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coupled effect of soil spatial variations and ground surface disturbance on existing tunnels using RFDM and Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that neglecting spatial variability can underestimate tunnel convergence, especially when severely disturbed by nearby environments. The surface surcharge mainly affects the mean value of tunnel convergence, with the coefficient of variation largely influenced by soil spatial variability.

Probabilistic characterization of subsurface stratigraphic configuration with modified random field approach

Chao Zhao et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of subsurface stratigraphic configuration is crucial to geotechnical engineering work, but uncertainty can be significant due to complexity and limited data availability. This paper presents a method for characterizing subsurface stratigraphy with limited borehole data, demonstrating its effectiveness and advantages through comparative analyses and a case study in Western Australia.
