OCT Signs of Early Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Interreader Agreement Classification of Atrophy Meetings Report 6

Zhichao Wu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the interreader agreement for incomplete retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and outer retinal atrophy (iRORA) and complete RPE and outer retinal atrophy (cRORA) and their related features in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The results showed that most features had substantial or better interreader agreement and the consistency of early atrophy could be improved by optimizing the combination of features.

Reproducibility of qualitative assessment of drusen volume in eyes with age related macular degeneration

Federico Corvi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that human graders can reliably assess central drusen volume by qualitative inspection of OCT B-scans, showing excellent agreement with the automated evaluation method. This approach may be valuable in evaluating the risk for progression to late AMD.

Natural history of incomplete retinal pigment epithelial and outer retinal atrophy in age-related macular degeneration

Giulia Corradetti et al.

Summary: The majority of incident iRORA lesions progress to cRORA within a 24-month period, with intraretinal hyperreflective foci and extrafoveal iRORA location at baseline being associated with a faster rate of progression to cRORA.

Imaging Features Associated with Progression to Geographic Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Classification of Atrophy Meeting Report 5

Glenn J. Jaffe et al.

Summary: An international consensus was reached on the terms and descriptions of multimodal imaging features associated with geographic atrophy (GA) and risk for GA progression in eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The experts analyzed and discussed various retinal features related to AMD, reached agreements on definitions, and further refined them through grading exercises. This information will benefit clinicians, researchers, and clinical trial designers interested in managing AMD patients and studying interventions for the disease.

Swept-Source OCT Angiographic Characteristics of Treatment-Naive Nonexudative Macular Neovascularization in AMD Prior to Exudation

Mengxi Shen et al.

Summary: The characteristics of treatment-naive nonexudative macular neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration before the onset of exudation were investigated using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. The onset of exudation was correlated with less vascularity and smaller pigment epithelial detachment volume, while no significant differences were observed in macular neovascularization area, choriocapillaris flow deficits, mean choroidal thickness, or choroid vascularity index measurements. More investigations are needed to explore these and other anatomical changes as predictors of near-term exudation.

Stages of Drusen-Associated Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Visible via Histologically Validated Fundus Autofluorescence

Ling Chen et al.

Summary: This study identified histological correlates for different stages of drusen-associated atrophy in eyes with advanced AMD using fundus autofluorescence and color fundus photography. The research supports 4 FAF stages of drusen-associated atrophy and highlights the role of these stages in the pathogenesis of AMD.
