The Impacts of Climate Change on Ticks and Tick-Borne Disease Risk

Lucy Gilbert

Summary: Ticks are widespread and carry pathogens, impacting by climate change; tick-borne disease systems are complex with diverse drivers, modeling can help understand changes; future research should focus on assessing the resilience of ticks and tick-borne pathogens to climate change.

Ticks infesting humans and associated pathogens: a cross-sectional study in a 3-year period (2017-2019) in northwest Italy

Tania Audino et al.

Summary: This study reported the prevalence of tick bites and tick-borne pathogens documented for humans in Piedmont, northwest Italy during the period of 2017-2019. Most ticks belonged to the genus Ixodes, with Ixodes ricinus being the most common. A subset of 500 ticks collected from at-risk populations showed an overall infection prevalence of 22.8%, with Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp., and Anaplasma spp. being the main pathogens detected.

Emergence of Lyme borreliosis in the province of Verona, Northern Italy: Five-years of sentinel surveillance

Anna Beltrame et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant increase in the incidence of Lyme borreliosis in the province of Verona, Northern Italy, with early localized Lyme borreliosis being the most common presentation. It emphasizes the need to increase knowledge on the epidemiology and clinical manifestation of Lyme borreliosis to allow for early diagnosis and treatment.

Imported Hyalomma ticks in the Netherlands 2018-2020

Mathilde Uiterwijk et al.

Summary: This study found adult Hyalomma ticks in the Netherlands, mostly reported by citizens who found them on horses or humans. No Hyalomma ticks were found in the cross-sectional horse survey. Only one of the ticks tested positive for Rickettsia aeschlimannii, indicating a low risk of introduction of tick-borne diseases via these ticks.

Risk of tick-borne zoonoses in urban green areas: A case study from Turin, northwestern Italy

Alessandro Bellato et al.

Summary: Ticks are increasingly reported in urban and peri-urban areas in Europe, with land use changes facilitating human contact with these vectors. A study conducted in two natural reserves near Turin, Italy, found that tick infestation is influenced by habitat diversity and seasonal variation, with a higher risk of infection by zoonotic agents in areas with higher tick density. Educational programs on personal protection and tick-borne diseases surveillance should be enhanced in green urban landscapes to address the threat posed by tick vectors.

Low Risk Perception about Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in an Area Recently Invaded by Ticks in Northwestern Italy

Aitor Garcia-Vozmediano et al.

Summary: The study investigated people's perception of health risks posed by ticks in an area recently invaded by these arthropods, as well as the infection caused by tick bites. The findings show that people rarely adopt preventive measures against ticks, yet previous experience of tick bites is positively associated with the adoption of personal protection measures. Overall, public awareness about the risks of being bitten by infected ticks should be improved to mitigate the increasing incidence of tick-borne diseases in the region.
