Visualization of a novel fluorescent-tagged bisphosphonate behavior during reverse osmosis desalination of water with high sulfate content

Maxim Oshchepkov et al.

Summary: A study on gypsum scaling during reverse osmosis desalination process revealed a nonconventional mechanism of antiscalant efficacy, with scaling taking place via heterogeneous nucleation in the bulk retentate phase. The fluorescent-tagged antiscalants were shown to interact with "nanodust" particles, isolating them from calcium and sulfate ions sorption, and reducing the number of gypsum nucleation centers to diminish the overall scaling rate. The scale formation scenario changes from the bulk medium to sediment crystals growth on the membrane surface at the end of desalination process.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy of Anion-Exchange Membrane AMX-Sb Fouled by Red Wine Components

Summary: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows potential for assessing capacitance of interphase boundaries and resistance of foulant layers. Different contact conditions lead to variations in water splitting and resistance, with short-term contact affecting water splitting and longer contact causing biofouling to influence electrolysis.

The impact of high effective electrodialytic desalination on acid whey stream at high temperature

Arthur Merkel et al.

Summary: Increasing the electrodialysis temperature in the range of 15-55 degrees Celsius leads to higher total mass flux and electrodialysis capacity, while maintaining specific energy consumption values. Removal of weak organic acids from whey and deacidification degree both increase as temperature rises.

Effects of feed composition on the fouling on cation-exchange membranes desalinating polymer-flooding produced water

P. A. Sosa-Fernandez et al.

Summary: The hypothesis states that cation exchange membranes (CEMs) face fouling issues when used in desalination of wastewater from the oil and gas industry, affecting their performance. Fouling experiments were conducted on commercial CEMs with varying solutions, demonstrating that fouling primarily occurs in the presence of polyelectrolytes. The study found that changing the direction of current could remove the polyelectrolyte fouling layer, with precipitation occurring on the opposite side of the membrane.

Summary: This study found that polyphenols in cranberry juice are associated with ion-exchange membrane fouling, and different membrane structures and properties can impact the adsorption and desorption of phenolic compounds. The research suggests that this new knowledge can contribute to a more informed selection of membranes and the development of protocols for extending their life cycle.

Identification of Anthocyanins and Their Fouling Mechanisms during Non-Thermal Nanofiltration of Blueberry Aqueous Extracts

Ming Cai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify anthocyanins on the NF membrane and explore their fouling mechanisms during concentration of blueberry extracts. The interactions between anthocyanins and polyamide membranes were mainly governed by the CH-pi and pi-pi stacking of aromatic rings, the establishment of hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interaction. This research will be beneficial for controlling fouling and selecting cleaning agents in concentrating anthocyanin-rich extracts.

Comparative analysis of salt cleaning and osmotic backwash on calcium-bridged organic fouling in nanofiltration process

Hyunsu Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that calcium ions aggravate organic fouling and ion exchange plays a crucial role in the cleaning mechanism of salt cleaning and osmotic backwash. Osmotic backwash demonstrates higher cleaning efficiency compared to salt cleaning, mainly due to the synergistic effect of backwash flux and ion exchange in removing fouling structure on the membrane surface.
